Traditionally, plastics (and therefore rain ponchos) have been made from petrochemicals. These are heavily used worldwide – low production costs, light weight, strength, relative imperviousness to gas and water, clarity and printability are all benefits of traditional plastics.
 
However, the final disposal of used flexible plastics causes problems.
